Want to work on Google UI? It's hiring time.

Really. Join our UI team.

You'd be helping shape the way Google works and looks. We're looking for visually-oriented software engineers who understand application development for browsers. And specifically, we're looking for people who'd be interested in helping with Blogger.

Also, you'd be working for some time closely with Ev, Jason, Steve, myself, and the rest of the nuts in the basket. (It is my hope this is viewed more as a perquisite than a detriment.)

'Course you might get drafted to do other things while you're here. I was cherry-picked and found myself knee-deep in the code of some mail app.

So, let me know if you're interested. Leave a comment here, if you'd like, or a link to a resumé, portfolio, or application you've built. You gotta be a strong coder, and you need to be expert in HTML, CSS, and Javascript but if you're interested in building interfaces that will be used by millions of users, then this is pretty much a great opportunity.

They won't let me leave the building until you arrive. Please hurry.

So, the universe has decided to pants me.

    So be it!

  2. David 12:00 AM

If only I was in the area permanently. Damn.

  3. Anonymous 5:05 AM

Too bad, I live in the Netherlands.

    - Mark Wubben (http://neo.dzygn.com)

(P.S. Why do I need a Blogger account to post a comment?)

  4. chris 5:46 AM

    Hey,
I would love this job, who/where whould I email to get in contact with the right people?

  5. Chris Wetherell 9:15 AM

To Mark from neo.dzygn.com: But Mark you don't need a Blogger account to comment, you can just-

*pauses* But you've already posted as "Anonymous." AH. Got it.

For those who don't know...Mark did post without a Blogger account, I think he might be joining a fine Blogger tradition of takin' the p*ss out of someone. :) Mark is in good company since I have my own issues with the comments UI at Blogger.

  6. Chris Wetherell 9:22 AM

To Chris: I'm definitely "the right people". My contact info is on this site. If you can afford non-anonymity you can also just post a link or two here. (Not everyone can and I understand that.)

    Hey - wtf? I can't delete that :)

(It asks me do sign in if I try, and then just takes me to my dashboard ... but we could fix that!.)

  10. Stewart 7:47 PM

    *sigh*

  11. Chris Wetherell 11:24 PM

To Stewart (on a Totally Unrelated Matter): One smart thing that we could do would involve approaching and integrating creative engineering teams with proven UI skills who've designed for community based on what they've written (well-appreciated by the web dev community) about client-side scripting, web standards, or other core web technologies like CSS, and who reside somewhere in the corner of an adjacent nation.

Man, the Things Daddy Would Like. Could fill a Sherry Hogshead.

To everyone: Please understand that I'll have a lot to look at as the days go by and that I may not be able to write you back personally. From what I understand, many interpersonal relationships are like that. Or at least, I'm going off that as theory, since I have not seen sunlight or other humans for some time.

  13. Anonymous 7:32 AM

To massless: sorry for the misunderstanding. I actually meant: why do I need a Blogger account in order to have my name and website in the "comment poster" area, instead of Anonymous?

    - Mark Wubben (http://neo.dzygn.com)

P.S. It would be nice to see alll comments when you post your own.

  14. Chris Wetherell 10:42 AM

To Mark: 'Cause according to the code ... there's no option for extra-user data. At least that's what it says today. However, to paraphrase Scarlett O' Hara, tomorrow and following (after I get my hands on it) is another day. ... And I also think easy access to post content and thread context are important during a comment creation task.

Hey! Google UI has always been in my psyche. And as a GUI designer, this makes me drool.

I'm a visual designer, not a code hound ...I'm sure there are some pixels that need pushing. So sign me up! Portfolio: http://www.wavelengthmedia.com/

    UI == You & I ....the users!

    Cheers,

  16. Anonymous 12:05 PM

Work for google? What proof can you give any prospective employee that you are a decent company to work for?

Are comments allowed on the google blog? Does everyone at google have a blog where they can post openly if they are happy at work? Does google provide a accurate and fair service (lol, dont answer that one, I know the answer)

Why pay for it, why not get it done for free, surely you must have someone at google working for the blogger department that can do a better job than what is currently on offer?

Oh no, thats why your hiring, but hang on, your putting all the small people out of business cos your muscling into areas other than search... Aha another microsoft in the making.......

Come on google - If you are going to do a job, do it well, or leave it to other people to do, dont be bully boys about it.

Just a quick update, as I didnt sign in before,
If google wants to be taken seriously, it needs to seriously stop providing bad results.

All the PR in the world is useless at the end of the day, and makes me think, WHY would i want to work for a company that is PR orientated.

Perhaps when google shows real results, we will see real people applying, not desperate people who just want the money.
