The answer? John Draper A.K.A. Cap'n Crunch
In 1972, John got a call from a kid who turned him onto a toy whistle fished out of a Cap'n Crunch cereal box. John discovered that with the whistle and a "blue box" (tone generating device), he was able to gain internal control of the phone company's long distance switching equipment.

The trick no longer works. But something else might.
