In the wake of NIMDA and due to a generally heightened sensibility to security These Days, a co-worker and I uncovered a potential problem with network clients using web services.
In a nutshell: Web services might be vulnerable to desirable changes in firewall rules.
After NIMDA, we placed tighter restrictions on our firewall, particularly packets sent via HTTP. The processing required to sniff everything made a few of our web services clients unresponsive. We tried a variety of solutions, programmatic and otherwise, but realized we didn't have time to re-develop the software. In at least one case, we were stuck with third-party software which we would be unable to re-engineer. Our only solution to keeping those web services clients working was to take off the new firewall rules. A factor I hadn't considered before. Ugh.
Mmmm, meanwhile, watching America keeping the journalistic bar low...
How are stories prioritized at CNN.com? Why was Clinton's potential disbarment front page news? Today's bombing in Kashmir is of such a different and larger scale, simply unacceptable and terrifying. Topical and important.
So, who makes these decisions at major news organizations?
