Maps released.
Google's just released a beta of Google Maps.Dear Maps Team: You iz all of dat!
I've been bookmarking a number of searches such as the following:
- Thai restaurants in my neighborhood
- Hotels near Austin, TX
- Directions to my parent's neighborhood
- Manhattan
I wonder what other people will think of it -- I've been playing with it for weeks now and can imagine any number of interesting feature sets we could think to implement here. And I love dragging the map back and forth - my poor sense of direction is nicely augmented by getting immediate perspective.
Similarly, the recently released (and amazing) Amazon Yellow Pages Storefront Search (example: Bottom of the Hill) helps me with that as well since it has adjacency available via mouse hover - which is an interaction I very much adore and whose usefulness as led me to keep it bookmarked and I think I currently use it more often than Google Local.
...and for those who'll ask me later - there are a bunch of developers working at making our Maps Safari-compatible even as I type this. (And they'll continue to work on it immediately afterward as well. :)

Followed this over from Mefi. You sir, are da bomb. And much sweet, sweet love for the Safari work. I was dreading trying to step my mom, long distance from where I am in Greece now, through getting the latest G4-optimized Firefox build installed so she could use the Google Maps.
How long till we get the full treatment for Greece? Come on, if you're going to crack the whip, get those coders working on learning a new alphabet and get some cartographers to adequately map this 2.5nd World country!
Seriously, you guys rule. Kiss your team sloppily for me.

maps.corp.google don't seem to work for me. When I get rid of the .corp part things work just fine. Maybe you have an internal URL?

David: Yes. That's the wrong URL. It's maps.google.com. I'm sorry, I didn't play close atention as that must've been in my clipboard...

Well, good luck to the folks who are trying to force Safari into working with Google Maps... I've certainly had my share of bad experiences with that browser.
Sweet work on the app, keep it up!

Just thought I should clarify to new readers...I'm not a member of the Maps team - I'm just a Google engineer who's a fan of the application! But! every once in a while I can hover over the desk of people who are working on it and applaud. Or bother them. :)

Looks like you live right around the corner from my (new) neighborhood. We should have a google vs. laszlo, uh, Thai dinner sometime.
